Born to the family of Late Mr. Sylvanus UJbaakanwa Odionyenma and late Mrs.Beatrice
Nwaogazhi Odionyenma of Akwakuma Uratta in Owerri North Local Government Area
of Imo State about six decades ago, Uche Odionyenma had his early primary and
secondary education at Sacred Heart Primary School, Akwakuma/St.Mary’s Primary
School Apapa, Lagos and John F Kennedy International Secondary School,Obibi-
Ezena,Owerri.
Dr. Uche Odionyenma is a thorough bred Medical Laboratory Scientist with bias in
Medical Microbiology and a Fellowship in Hematology and Blood Transfusion Science.
Dr.Uche Odionyenma gained higher Diploma at The Polytechnic, Nekede-Owerri (HND Sc.
Tech.) and Degrees at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (BSc Microbiology.), Federal
University of Technology, Akure (MBA, Management), Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma
(MSc.Medical Laboratory Science with bias in Medical Microbiology) and University of
Benin, Benin City (PhD Medical Laboratory Science with bias in Medical Microbiology).
He also gained Professional qualifications at the SMLS, Obafemi Awolowo University
Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife (AIMLS with bias in Bacteriology)and SMLS, University
College Hospital, Ibadan (FIMLS with bias in Hematology and Blood Transfusion Science).
He has a rich work experience which has spanned from industrial esablishment to
research, academic and health institutions. He was the Head, MLS Department of College
of Health Technology Akure (1996-2013), Deputy Provost of the College of Health
Technology, Akure (2013-2015), President, Akure Dynamic Lions Club (2014-
2015),Chairman,Committee of Heads of MLT/MLA Training Institutions in Nigeria (2008-
2016), Two Times National Public Relations Officer, AMLSN (2004-2006 & 2006-
2008),National First Vice President, AMLSN (2014-2017),and Chairman, Forum of
Directors,Health Planning Research and Statistics in Nigeria (May 2023- Nov 2023). He
got automatic employment after NYSC with the Ondo State Government and rose
through the ranks to become Director, Medical Laboratory Services in 2012. He was the
Program Officer of the Ondo State Influenza Control programme as well as the State
Laboratory Focal Person & Quality Assurance Officer for the State Tuberculosis and
Leprosy Control Programme.
He was appointed Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Ondo State Ministry of Health
in 2021, the first Medical Laboratory Scientist to be so appointed-a position he held until he
exited the civil service in November 2023.
He is presently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Medical Laboratory Science as well
as Deputy Director, Remedial programme, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, Ondo
State.
His career of over thirty years in civil service has distinguished him as an
academic,Scientist, Researcher, Administrator, Bureaucrat and Technocrat who have
made enormous contributions in promoting quality Laboratory Medicine practices in
Nigeria and beyond.As a former Head, Department of Medical Laboratory Science, College of Health
Technology, Akure for over ten years and later Deputy Provost of the CHT Akure as well as
Examiner & Assessor to Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) organized
Professional examinations and Facilitator/Resource person to NTBLCP, AMLSN and KNCV
organized training programmes, Dr. Odionyenma has built tremendous capacity in Medical
Laboratory Science in Nigeria and tained both in-service and pre-service Medical Laboratory
Personnel.
Dr.Uche Odionyenma is a Fellow of both the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria
(FMLSCN) and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (FAMLSN). He is a
Certified Medical Laboratory Assessor & Auditor (CLAA)by both the US Clinical and Laboratory
Standard Institute (CLSI) and the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM). He is also a
recipient of NYSC honours awards at both Local and State Government levels given his
exemplary performance during his National Service period.
Dr. Odionyenma has attended over sixty (60) workshops and conferences locally and
internationally. He has many public lectures, publications in peer reviewed
journals,academic papers, and numerous awards to his credit.
In March 2018, he was appointed a member of the Governing Board of the Federal Medical
Centre, Owo by President Muhammadu Buhari, a position he held until 2023when the
current President dissolved all Boards of Parastatals.
Dr. Uche Odionyenma is married and blessed with two sons-Nnamdi and Onyii and a
daughter-Chiamaka.
